Bellapais Abbey - Where history meets nature in North Cyprus

Bellapais Abbey, built in the 12th century, stands as one of the most significant historical landmarks in Northern Cyprus. Known for its stunning Gothic architecture, the abbey offers a unique atmosphere that seamlessly blends with the natural beauty of the surrounding village.
The picturesque village of Bellapais, with its charming stone houses, narrow streets, and breathtaking scenery, provides a peaceful retreat for visitors. The classical music concerts held in the abbey create an unforgettable experience, where history and music unite in perfect harmony.
One of the most delightful moments here is sipping wine while enjoying the spectacular view of the sunset casting its colors over the landscape. After visiting the abbey, you can indulge in the flavors of Cypriot cuisine at nearby restaurants, savoring your meal with magnificent views. Bellapais Abbey is a destination where history, nature, and culture converge in perfect balance.
A Journey Through Time
Though the abbey suffered from neglect during the Ottoman era, it remains remarkably well-preserved, offering a glimpse into the monastic life of medieval Europe.
Architectural Highlights
One of the first things that strikes you about Bellapais Abbey is its stunning setting. Perched on a hillside, the abbey offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the Kyrenia coastline. As you explore the abbey, key highlights include:
- The Church: With its elegant Gothic arches and towering structure, the church is the heart of the abbey. Inside, the high-vaulted ceilings and remnants of frescoes evoke a sense of calm and reflection.
- The Cloisters: Surrounding a peaceful courtyard, the cloisters are a perfect spot for contemplation. The archways and columns, still in remarkable condition, transport you back to the days when monks walked these same paths.
- The Refectory: This vast dining hall is one of the largest and most impressive parts of the abbey. The large windows let in natural light, illuminating the stone walls that have stood for centuries.

Bellapais Abbey and Literature
Bellapais Abbey also has a unique connection to literature. The renowned British writer Lawrence Durrell lived nearby in the 1950s, and his famous book, Bitter Lemons of Cyprus, includes vivid descriptions of life in the village of Bellapais and the abbey itself. Durrell’s reflections offer readers a sense of the abbey’s tranquility and the village’s slow pace of life.
